Name another sport like
golf. I tell you there is no other like it. Let’s look at the comparisons,
basketball for instance, the hoops are always 10 feet tall. The dimensions
of football fields, tennis, hockey and basketball courts are always consistent.
In baseball all the bases and pitching distances are always the same. Then
there is golf, no two courses are the same, not even the holes are the same.
The practice area is even different from the course. It has no sand traps,
water hazards, trees or rough for you to contend with. That is why at the
driving range we are consistent. Golf is the only sport that you’re
hitting a ball that is standing still and you are getting penalties instead
of foul balls. No do overs here.
No one ever said golf
was easy, it is a difficult game, it’s difficult to get started
at, get better at, to hit a good shot, get a par, to practice, to get
sympathy and you need at least six hours including travel time to play
the round. Yet we still love it and are willing to overcome the disappointments
and set backs.
The good parts of
the game outweigh the bad. You do not have to be a
super athlete, jump high, run fast, throw far and spend half your time in the
gym lifting weights to get golf’s physical benefits. The continual walking,
bending and stretching are worth all the effort it took to get to the links.
Mentally, golf can
produce more adrenaline rushes in five hours than any other sport. All
you need is a well struck shot, a long putt holed, a perfect chip shoot
and shooting a bogey or better score. The best part is spending that
special day with a super compatible foursome.
We have chosen a sport that enables us to enjoy playing at various courses
and venues and no two are ever the same. We can participate in outings no matter
what our level of skill is. We can improve by taking lessons from a pro or
listening to the self proclaimed coach in our
foursome who is always at the ready to critique our game.
